Examining the Effectiveness of SMAQMD's Check Before You Burn Program
Clients
Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD)
In Sacramento County, residential wood burning accounts for approximately one-third of wintertime particles. To reduce PM2.5 levels, the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District (SMAQMD) established a wintertime residential wood burning curtailment program that restricts burning based on air quality forecasts provided by Sonoma Technology. SMAQMD used these forecasts to provide the public with daily burn status, including periods when burning is prohibited.

Sonoma Technology's evaluation of the benefits of the Check Before You Burn Program indicated
